The world of online dating after a divorce

Social media revolutionizes everything, from the way we research to the way we grocery shop. Everything is done online and at our own pace. It makes sense then that social media also changes the way we date.

Between dating sites and hookup apps, most people find potential partners through their phones. And it is extremely intimidating when you first go on and see the hundreds of people looking for a partnership, just like you.

Exploring the dating pool with one swipe at a time

Unfortunately, you can't expect the right person on your first swipe. You will have to explore your options and possibly go on several dates until you feel comfortable again. Luckily, there are several ways to enter the dating scene smoothly after a separation:

  • Pick the right platform - After a divorce, you may not be ready to dive right into a serious relationship. Or you may be. Luckily, there are platforms for both interests, so make sure to pick the right one before setting a profile.
  • Craft a profile that represents you - It's easy to pick the best photos of ourselves and write a generic bio for our dating profiles. Instead, try to craft a profile that truly represents who you are. Love to hike? Post a photo from your last trip. Are you a whiz in the kitchen? Talk about how you want a fellow foodie.
  • Don't push yourself - After a few swipes, you might be excited to put yourself back into the dating pool, but don't rush yourself. Take your time to talk to people and arrange dates when you're comfortable. It will ensure a better experience for you and your potential partner.
  • Be experimental - You may think you know what your "type" is but use online dating to meet new people and experiment who might be a great person for you. You may be surprised by the qualities you want in the long-term.
  • Make sure you are ready to date again - There is a strong possibility that you start dating and realize you aren't ready. Recognize that and accept it because you don't need to force yourself to be in a relationship to be happy. Enjoy spending time with your friends and family instead.

Dating is challenging, just like a divorce, and you don't need to rush the process. Allow yourself time to dip your toe back into the dating pool and find love once again.
