Your Voice In Life's Uncertain Times

Your gender may no longer determine your divorce responsibilities

In times past, it was primarily men who were responsible for making alimony payments to their wives, as well as funding the majority of the required child support for their children. However, with changes in the prevalence of women in the workforce, your gender may no longer be a determining factor in the decisions made by court officials during your divorce. At Mayer Law Office, LLC, we have helped many people in Wisconsin as they work through their divorce.

If you have been working for a substantial period of time and are making a good amount of money, regardless of your gender, the courts may require that you pay for spousal support for your ex. These payments may be temporary depending on the nature of the agreement you have made, your ex’s ability to secure a stable job and his or her educational background. However, you should be prepared to continue making payments until further notice and budget your finances accordingly.

Marketwatch.com suggests that the number of women who are the primary breadwinners in their household is increasing rapidly. As such, even though men are still the primary payers of child support and alimony, courts are seeing a rise in the number of women who are also taking on these responsibilities now. If you are required to pay alimony, you can work to appeal the court’s decision, especially if you suspect that the money you are being required to pay is not necessary for your ex to survive.

When you are prepared to pay alimony and are able to negotiate the terms as best as you can, you may be able to secure an agreement that will not require you to pay alimony for the long-term. For more information about paying spousal support, visit our web page.
