Tips for summertime extended visitation

Wisconsin children who spend most of their school year with a custodial parent may have the opportunity to spend longer visitation sessions with their non-custodial parent in the summertime. While it is great for the child to develop a better relationship with both parents, it can be a big change for everybody. By following the tips below, you can help to smooth the transition of longer visitation sessions in the summertime for your children.

Look at the long-term perspective

Child custody tends to be a topic that brings up a lot of emotions in both parents. While you may not agree with everything that your ex does, it’s important to realize the long-term aspect of your child spending time with them. It’s a well-known fact that children who maintain a positive relationship with both parents tend to experience fewer mental health problems than those who aren’t given the opportunity to develop relationships with both parents.

Talk to your children about their feelings

It’s perfectly natural for children who spend most of the year with one parent to not want to spend an extended period of time in the summertime with the other parent. In most cases, this is simply due to the fact that it’s different than what they’re used to. As a parent, it’s your responsibility to listen to your child’s feelings and help them to develop a positive view of the situation. Don’t fall into the trap of allowing your children to decide who they get to stay with based on their feelings at the time.
