Your Voice In Life's Uncertain Times

What protections do restraining orders offer?

On Behalf of | Apr 26, 2019 | Family Law |

Unfortunately, not all divorcing couples in Wisconsin will have a calm and collected split. Not all relationships are the same, and Mayer Law Office, LLC, is here to help you if you are trying to escape from a situation in which a restraining order may be necessary.

Restraining orders are protective measures meant to guard you against the following:

  • Stalking
  • Abuse
  • Unwanted physical contact
  • Sexual assault
  • Harassment
  • Threats

Not only that, but with a restraining order, the person in question will not be able to come within 500 feet of your home or place of work. They can’t “engage in threatening behavior”, either. This means they can’t call your house or work, leave ominous messages, or otherwise make you feel like your safety is in jeopardy.

A temporary restraining order is often issued for a period of two weeks at first. After that, you and the person the restraining order is against will go to court for a hearing that will determine whether to lift the order or allow it to remain. If it is determined that the order will stay in effect, it can last for up to four years in cases of harassment or domestic violence, and two years for child abuse.
